Emerging Leaders


Emerging Leaders (EL) is a 3-credit-hour course (ELPS 310) taught as an elective in the Leadership Studies Minor but is an opportunity available for all students. EL is offered every Spring Semester for sophomores interested in studying leaders, leadership theories, and leadership application in various situations to cultivate emotionally intelligent leaders who will create positive social change on campus.

Course Overview

The course includes an off-campus leadership experience in which students travel to another city to visit colleges and universities to learn about varying leadership styles and challenges students face on those campuses. Previous trips have included:

  • Baton Rouge, LA – Louisiana State University & Southern University and A&M College
  • Tallahassee, FL – Florida State University & Florida A&M University
  • Atlanta, GA – Morehouse College & Emory University
  • Washington, DC – American University & Howard University
  • Charlotte, NC – University of North Carolina at Charlotte & Johnson C. Smith University
  • Boone, NC – Appalachian State University
  • Auburn, AL –  Auburn University

Emerging Leaders class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 PM – 3:45 PM in the Spring Semester and the mandatory EL trip will be held tentatively in March 2025. Class topics include social change, emotional intelligence, and transformational leadership.

To be considered for enrollment, students fill out an application and go through an interview process. All applicants must be full-time students at the time of course enrollment and must be in good academic standing as sophomores (students in their second year of college) with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

Applications for Spring 2025 will open on September 1 and close on September 29.
